Why DTF Ink Isn't Sticking to Your PET Film: 6 Causes and Real Fixes

Dry shop air, especially in winter, builds static charge on PET film as it feeds through the printer. That charge scatters ink droplets instead of letting them land where intended, producing uneven coverage that looks like an adhesion problem but is really electrical.


The fix: Run a small humidifier near your printer to keep humidity above 40 percent. Ground your printer, and confirm your film's anti-static treatment hasn't been compromised by improper storage.

5. Your RIP Settings Are Underfeeding Ink

If your RIP software lays down too little ink, especially in the white underbase, the layer never gets tacky enough to bond with the coating or hold powder. This shows up as prints that look thin, dull, or patchy even on good film.


The fix: Check ink limits and white ink density against your printer's recommended profile. Run a test swatch with full white coverage first. 6. Your Ink Is Old, Separated, or the Wrong Type

Water-based DTF ink settles over time. Pigment separates from the carrier fluid, and without shaking or recirculating it, the ink reaching the printhead lacks the resin needed to bond to the film. Generic pigment ink causes the same failure, since it wasn't built to bind with coating or powder at all.
